UAB Softball Defeats WKU to Win Series

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The UAB softball team clinched the series over WKU with a 3-2 win Sunday at the WKU Softball Complex.
WKU (20-20, 4-8) scored the first run of the game when Rebekah Engelhardt pinged one off the left field foul pole for the first home run of her career and the 1-0 lead.
UAB (13-21, 5-4) fought back in the top of the fifth inning to claim the lead. Destini England got things started with a triple to right field before Danii Fernandez drew a walk to place runners on the corners for the Blazers.
Joanna Fallen was next to the plate and singled to left field but the ball trickled past the fielder and Fallen took the opportunity to advance to third and score two runs.
Mary Warren stepped to the plate next and sent a sacrifice fly to deep center to plate Fallen for the 3-1 lead.
WKU rallied in the seventh inning and plated one final run when Morgan McElroy scored on a groundout to second to make the final score 3-2.
The Blazers outhit the Hilltoppers 6-3 in the series finale win. Fallen and Petree both had multi-hit games while England and Amy Waters each contributed with one a piece.
Cara Goodwin (2-7) celebrated the win in the circle for the Blazers. The senior right-hander tossed her second complete game of the weekend, tallied seven strikeouts and only gave up one earned run.
Kathryn Downing (11-7) suffered the loss for the Hilltoppers. She gave up two earned runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work.
UAB will be back on the diamond Tuesday as it welcomes Jacksonville State to Mary Bowers Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
