Blazers Split in Doubleheader with Middle Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The UAB softball team split in a doubleheader with Middle Tennessee Wednesday at Blue Raider Softball Field in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Blazers won the first game, 3-1, and dropped the second game, 4-2.
UAB 3, MTSU 1
Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when UAB (20-19, 11-9) struck with two outs. Mary Warren stepped to the plate and sent a three-run no doubter to centerfield to take the, 3-0, lead.
Middle Tennessee (18-27, 5-15) rallied in the bottom of the seventh and scored one run when Dani Munoz sent a solo-shot over the left field wall to shrink the Blazers’ lead to, 3-1.
The Blazers outhit the Blue Raiders 6-4. Freshmen Destini England and Natalie Erwin both had two-hit games while Madison Millsaps and Warren each contributed one.
Cara Goodwin (6-11) got the win in the circle for the Blazers. The veteran right-hander tossed the complete game, recorded five strikeouts and allowed only one run to score.
Cori Jennings (10-14) took the loss for the Blue Raiders. She gave up two runs and recorded one strikeout in six innings of work.
UAB 2, MTSU 4
Middle Tennessee (19-27, 6-15) struck early and plated four runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Samantha Vacko doubled to centerfield to score Munoz for the, 1-0, lead. The second Blue Raider run came when Summer Burgess drew a bases-loaded walk.
The final two runs of the inning came on a UAB fielding error that scored Lauren Payne and Vacko for the, 4-0, lead.
UAB (20-30, 11-10) fought back and plated one run in the top of the third inning. Danii Fernandez singled to left field and drove in Amy Waters, who reached on a double to right field, to shrink Middle Tennessee’s lead to, 4-1.
The second UAB run came in the top of the sixth inning when Warren sent her second homer of the day to left field bringing the score to, 4-2.
The Blue Raiders outhit the Blazers 11-10. Fernandez, Warren and Waters all recorded multi-hit games while Joanna Fallen, Erwin, England and Garcia all had one each.
Megan Smith (3-4) suffered the loss in the circle for UAB. She gave up four runs on eight hits and recorded two strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched.
Megan Chocallo (1-6) got the win for the Blue Raiders. She gave up two runs on eight hits and tallied two strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.
The Blazers will be back on the diamond May 5-6 as they travel to Huntington, W. Va., to face the conference’s top ranked team, Marshall.
A single game will be played Friday at 1 p.m. and a doubleheader will be played Saturday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
