Blazers Had Four Bowlers Qualify Individually
BROOKLYN – The No. 20 UAB Bowling team was recognized for its academic successes for the 2016-17 year by the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA). Each year the NTCA highlights programs with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher and UAB ranked 13th overall with a GPA of 3.41.
"I am thrilled to announce that half of our team has made the NTCA All-Academic Team," head coach Michelle Crews said. "Four student-athletes is the most we have ever had to earn a sport on this list. In addition, this is the first time our team has made the list with one of the top team GPA's in the NCAA bowling. We had some big goals as a team, we made our return after a year off of competition and 7-of-8 of our team was freshmen, and I am so proud of everything our Blazers accomplished this year on the lanes, in the classroom and in the community."
In addition to the team being honored, Rachael Berg, Alexa Fernandez, Madeleine McDuff and Rachel Strogin each received NTCA Individual Academic Awards. To be eligible for individual honors student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher. There was a total of 229 honorees representing 50 NCAA programs.
Berg carries a 3.53 GPA majoring in elementary education. She was named to the 2016-17 C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll as well as the Spring 2017 UAB Dean's List and the UAB Athletic Director's Honor Roll for both the Fall 2016 and Spring 2017.
Fernandez carries a 3.79 GPA while majoring in chemistry. She carried an impressive 4.0 GPA in her first semester on campus and earned a spot on the UAB President's List in Fall 2016. She holds a Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal and was named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll for the 2016-17 year. The Costa Rica native was also named to the UAB Athletic Director's Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters of her freshman year.
McDuff, a recent graduate with a degree in communications management, graduated with a
3.25 cumulative GPA. She was named to the 2016-17 C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. The Katy, Texas native was a member of the UAB Dean's List three times throughout her career and the UAB Athletic Director's Honor Roll five times.
Strogin carries a 3.74 GPA while majoring in biomedical sciences. She garnered UAB Presidential Honors in her first semester on campus.
