Tampa, Fla. – The Blazers softball team wrapped up their opening weekend at the USF Wilson DeMarini Tournament falling 15-4 to Georgia State and 6-0 against No.2 Florida.
In both games it was costly mistakes that led to big innings for the Panthers and Gators and dealt UAB its third and fourth losses in its first five games. Against Georgia State, UAB committed six errors that turned into four runs for the Panthers and allowed innings to continue and Georgia State to gain momentum.
UAB trailed the Panthers 4-2 going into the fifth inning but committed two errors and allowed Georgia State to score three runs. In the sixth, UAB again gave up two errors which the Panthers turned into four runs and in seventh, the Blazers had just one error but again gave up four runs.
Starting pitcher Emily Kachel was chased from the game after throwing just 1.1 innings allowing four runs on five hits.
The Green and Gold showed great resiliency though, bouncing back and immediately taking on the No. 2 Florida Gators just 30 minutes after suffering the 15-4 loss to Georgia State. Once again Kachel took the ball for the start and looked like the game before didn't even happen as she tossed four no-hit innings to start and completely shut down the Florida offense.
But as flawless as Kachel was against the Gators, it was a fielding error followed up by hitting a batter that gave Florida the momentum to break open the game and push six runs across the plate in the fifth inning.
Kachel returned to form the sixth inning getting the Gators out in order. In all, Kachel no-hit Florida for five of the six innings she pitched.
However, she took both losses against Georgia State and Florida and falls to 1-3 on the season.
As tough as the opening weekend was, there were flashes of brilliance that starts with Kachel shutting down Florida for five innings and continues on to Destini England being a table setter going 6-for-17 with a .353 batting average a double and two walks.
England also shined in center field with multiple putouts in three of the five games and recorded two assists over the weekend. The most outstanding play from England however, came against USF when she made a sliding grab and came up firing to second to turn a double play.
Megan Smith was a steady hand at the plate hitting .333 over the five game tournament while knocking three doubles a home run and driving in four RBI. Analyse Petree hit .462 in the opening weekend scoring two runs and blasting a home run against Illinois State that helped propel UAB to its lone win this weekend.
The Blazers now sit at 1-4 as they look to regroup and begin preparing for the Mary Nutter Classic that will be played in Cathedral City, Calif. Feb. 17-19.
