UAB Drops Tough Match at Florida Atlantic, 4-2
3/11/2018 6:50:00 PM | Men's Tennis
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's tennis team gave Florida Atlantic all it could handle but could not get it done in singles play as the Blazers fell to the Owls, 4-2, on Sunday morning at the FAU Tennis Complex.
All six of the contested points came in singles action, which was played first due to the threat of severe weather in the Boca Raton area. As a result of FAU clinching the match in singles, doubles was not played.
After going down 1-0 early following a loss on Court 4, senior Stefan Gonzalez took care of the Owls' Jason Legall 6-4, 6-2, on Court 2 to knot the match up at 1-1 and earn his third singles victory of the season.
Sophomore Giovani Pasini claimed UAB's only other win of the morning, taking down Thomas Bugeaud 6-4, 7-6 to cut the lead to 3-2 with one point still on the table.
On the final court, Tim Dollman and and FAU's Remi Chancerel found themselves in a heated three-set battle to decide the match. Dollman won the first set easily, earning the 6-4 win to take a one-set advantage.
After Dollman dropped set two 6-1, the two were forced to play a tiebreaking match for all the marbles. The Cape Town, South Africa, native gave it his all against the FAU senior, but fell in the deciding set, 7-5, to secure the 4-2 match win for the Owls.
UAB (7-6, 0-2) returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Fort Myers, Florida, to face off with Florida Gulf Coast. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. (CST).
