CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UAB women's tennis team rallied to win the final two singles matches to come from behind for a 4-3 victory over Charlotte on Friday to run its winning streak to three.
Sophomore Marlene Herrmann won her seventh consecutive singles match and clinched the win in the process for the Blazers when she defeated Alexandra Lee 7-6, 7-6 at the No. 2 position. Herrmann, who is the reigning Conference USA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, has not lost a singles match since Feb. 23.
"I am so proud of the fight and mental toughness of this team," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "Charlotte came at us from the very first point and we were running on fumes by the end of the match, but we found a way to get the win solely on heart and guts."
Rocio Safont and Immie Cowper gave Charlotte an early edge by taking the first doubles match with a 6-3 win over Megan Bertrands and Jana Hecking. Herrmann and Sonia Grzywocz answered for UAB with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 over Tai Martin and Lee to force the deciding match. The 49ers, however, took the third doubles match and built a 1-0 lead.
Pierina Imparato extended the Charlotte lead to 2-0 after she defeated Hecking 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5, but Dominika Hrabalova cut the lead in half for UAB with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over Cowper at No. 6.
Sophie Dodds posted a 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 victory over Safont at No. 3 to even the score at 2-2 before Emma Scott regained the lead for Charlotte with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Bertrands at No. 4.
Alexandra Shchipakina kept UAB alive at No. 1 when she defeated Martin 6-1, 2-6, 7-6, setting the stage for Herrmann's heroics at No. 2.
UAB returns to action Wednesday at 12 p.m. when the Blazers welcome Mercer to George Ward Park.
