BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Claire Blount did it all in the circle and at the plate for the Blazers in their 10-1 run-rule win over Alabama A&M Tuesday night at Mary Bowers Field.
The sophomore pitcher got the start in the circle and pitched a complete game against the Bulldogs allowing just one run on two hits while striking out six. The Pembroke Pines, Fla. native picked up her first win of the season and improves to 1-10 on the year.
Blount didn't just dominate in the circle, she stood tall in the batter's box going 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and three RBI. The homer is Blount's first of the season and third long ball of her career.
UAB (11-20-1) got the offense going early in the bottom of the first as Destini England and Katelyn Prater reached base on a pair of singles and with one out, Rachel Rogers hit a double off the wall in center field to drive them home.
Sarah Crawford singled to move Rogers to third and Molli Garcia hit a grounder to the shortstop which was enough to score Rogers from third base. A dropped fly ball by the Alabama A&M left fielder let another run score before the Bulldogs were able to get the third out. The Blazers scored four runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the first when it was all said and done.
Blount added to the lead with a solo home run off the scoreboard in left in the bottom of the second to give UAB a 5-0 lead.
UAB tacked on two more runs in the third as Garcia drew a two-out walk and Natalie Erwin drove her home with a double down the left field line. Katlyn Sides hit a triple to right center and scored Erwin as the Green and Gold took a 7-0 lead.
Alabama A&M (12-12) got a run back with a one-out solo homer of its own in the top half of the fourth. It didn't faze Blount however, as she struck out the next two hitters to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Megan Smith laced a lead-off double to right center and was driven home by Rachel Owens who singled and advanced to second giving UAB an 8-1 lead. Blount stepped to the plate with runners on the corners and one out and smacked a walk-off double to left sending Sides and Owens racing for home and giving the Blazers the 10-1 victory.
