Blazers Top EKU in Non-Conference Action

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Marlene Herrmann had the game-winning point and the UAB women's tennis team secured a 4-3 victory over EKU Sunday afternoon at George Ward Park.

UAB (4-8) found itself in an early hole after EKU won the first doubles match by turning in a 6-1 victory at the No. 3 position. The Blazers, however, used a 6-3 win from Herrmann and Sonia Grzywocz at No. 1 to pull even with the Colonels. Alexandra Shchipakina and Sophie Dodds completed the comeback when they downed Kristina Lagoda and Viktorija Demcenkova 7-6 at No. 2 to earn the point for UAB.

Jana Hecking put the Blazers ahead 2-0 following her 6-1, 6-4 singles victory over Alexandra Belle at No. 4. After EKU won the next two singles matches to even the score at 2-2, Dominika Hrabalova regained the lead for UAB with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win over Sagung Dwinta at No. 6. Hermanna followed with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 victory against Lagoda to clinch the win.

"That was a great college tennis battle," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "I'm very proud of our resiliency, composure and grit that we showed today in a match that lasted over four hours. We won a match where we were down match points in, and we lost a match where we were up in match points. That's college tennis. It was a hard-fought match by both teams."

UAB returns to action Wednesday at 2 p.m. when the Blazers host UT Martin at George Ward Park.
