BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team fell to in-state rival Troy, 6-4, Tuesday night at Mary Bowers Field. The Blazers and Trojans split the season series 1-1 after the Green and Gold won earlier in the year at Troy.
Troy (24-17) strung together three hits and took advantage of two defensive miscues by the Blazers to put four runs on the board in the third inning, taking a 5-1 lead. The Trojans got started in the third with back-to-back hits, a double and a single, to put runners on the corners with one out.
An error let the Trojan's Brooke Echols reach safely and the run to score from third. The runner on first advanced to third and Echols advanced to second. Kaylee Hussey reached on a fielder's choice with the following at-bat and UAB was unable to get the out at home, allowing another run to score.
UAB (15-25-1) induced another fielder's choice and was able to get the runner at home for the second out. Hope Hernandez hit a single to load the bases with two out and Taylor Corbett hit a shallow fly to left but it was dropped by the left fielder allowing two more runs to score. However, Hernandez was thrown out at third by the UAB left fielder for the final out of the inning.
Analyse Petree homered in the bottom of the third with a solo shot to left, cutting into the Troy lead 5-2. The Trojans added another run in the fourth, extending its lead back out to four runs, taking a 6-2 lead.
In the bottom half of the fifth, UAB's two-out magic returned.
Natalie Erwin singled to lead off the inning, but Troy was able to get a pop up to the first baseman and a ground out to the shortstop for two quick outs. Erwin advanced to second on the ground out and a wild pitch allowed her to move to third.
After Petree drew a walk, Molli Garcia laced a single up the middle, driving home Erwin and chipping into the Troy lead once again.
Katlyn Sides hit a one-out single through the middle of the infield in the sixth inning and Destini England knocked her third triple of the year to score Sides from first before a Troy pitching change shut down the Blazer rally once again.
UAB put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh but could not bring them home to tie the game and fell to the Trojans, 6-4.
Emily Kachel (10-11) got the start for the Blazers in the circle, giving up six runs, two earned, on seven hits, to take the loss. The Kennesaw, Ga. native struck out three in 3.1 innings of work. Blount tossed 3.2 innings, giving up just two hits, a walk and striking out four.
