UAB Falls to Southern Miss, 5-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's tennis team dropped a tough decision on Sunday afternoon, falling to Conference USA foe Southern Miss, 5-2, at the Southern Miss Tennis Facility.
UAB (12-11, 1-2) finishes the 2017-18 campaign with a 4-5 road record, its most road wins since winning four matches away from Birmingham during the 2009-10 season.
After dropping the doubles point and the opening singles match to go down 2-0 early, junior Alexandra Shchipakina pulled a match back for the Blazers with a 7-6, 6-3 victory on Court 1.
From there, Southern Miss rattled off three-straight singles wins on Courts 3, 6 and 4, including a 7-6, 6-2 win on Court 6 by Claudia Castella, to clinch the overall victory for the Golden Eagles.
Marlene Herrmann provided the Green and Gold with their final victory of the afternoon, toppling Rikeetha Pereira of Southern Miss, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot. Herrmann is now 14-4 in singles play and 13-4 playing at No. 2.
UAB now turns its attention to the Conference USA Tournament, which will begin on April 19 in Norfolk, Va.
