UAB Takes Seventh at Bearcat Hammer Open

BIRMINGHAM- After another strong weekend, UAB is showing why they are deserving of their national ranking. The No. 19 Blazers posted an 8-4 record over the weekend, including a near-perfect 3-1 record on Friday to finish in seventh place at the Bearcat Hammer Open.
UAB started their competition on Friday with five baker matches. The Blazers started with a tough 966-867 loss to No. 2 McKendree but UAB did not lose hope. After a bye round, the Blazers secured an 850-752 win over Dominican and a great 1024-852 win over No. 12 Central Missouri. UAB locked in a 3-1 record with a 867-836 win against Lewis to complete the first day of competition in eighth place.
The Blazers completed the second day of competition in strong fashion by finishing the day in seventh place with a 3-2 record. UAB picked up traditional match victories over Valparaiso (1013-927), Upper Iowa (898-785), and Kentucky Wesleyan (835-767). The Blazers would have success until having hard fighting loses to St. Francis Brooklyn (909-876) and No. 18 Maryville (955-935) in which came down to the 10th frame of the match. UAB was 6-3 overall heading into their last day of competition.
On Sunday, the Blazers found themselves in a very competitive match in the opening round. UAB went seven games in their loss to Lewis by a score of 4-3 (164-136, 173-172, 189-236, 158-163, 113-214, 196-168, and 171-201). UAB went on to the next round to defeat St. Francis Brooklyn 4-2 (203-140, 170-169, 220-180, 147-162, 180-193, 197-146) to set up a rematch with Lewis. The Blazers defeated Lewis 4-1(181-185, 203-185, 181-178, 243-208, and 220-196) to secure seventh place.
Individually, Rachel Strogin led the way with a total pinfall of 1,002 to finish in seventh place. Jamie Krasnigor (943) and Samantha Johnson (936) finished in 19th and 23rd, respectively, to place the Blazers in the top 25 overall.
UAB will have a bye week and return to the lanes on Nov. 8 for their first MEAC match hosted by Coppin State University in Baltimore, MD.
