Blazers Notch Fifth Top-10 Performance of the Season

After a weekend in Orlando, the UAB bowling team took home seventh place overall at the Sunshine State Winter Classic with a record of 8-5 for its fifth top-10 finish of the season.
The Blazers (62-26) opened the tournament 4-1 on the first day of competition beating Prairie View A&M (975-873), No. 22 Monmouth (94-926), No. 20 Sacred Heart (997-953), and No. 3 Nebraska (1,028-979) for a combined baker pin-fall of 4,835.
On Saturday, the Green and Gold secured two more victories over Bethune-Cookman (948-594) and Florida A&M (910-818) however, fell just short in its matches with No. 18 Maryville, No. 7 Stephen F. Austin, and No. 2 Vanderbilt.
Individually, juniors Taylor Russell and Rachel Strogin led UAB both averaging twin scores of 189.20 across their 10 matches.
In their first match of tournament play on Sunday, the Green and Gold matched up with Maryville for the second time during the weekend, falling by a close score. The Blazers were not leaving Orlando in silence as they sprang back to finish their final day by adding two more wins over No. 25 Youngstown (1,437-1,327) and No. 9 Tulane (1,230-1,083) and securing a seventh place finish.
The Blazers return to action Feb. 23-24 to compete in the second MEAC Invitational, held in Greensboro, N.C.
