CONROE, Texas – Junior Amy Woodham pitched her second-consecutive complete game shutout to lead the UAB softball team to a 2-0 victory over McNeese State on the final day of the Scrap Yard College Softball Classic.
Woodham opened the tournament with a 6-0 blanking of South Dakota State, then returned the circle today and allowed just two hits with five strikeouts to help UAB (8-3) avenge last night's loss to McNeese (7-2).
For the weekend, Woodham was 2-0 in 14 innings of work, recording a 0.00 ERA with eight hits and 11 strikeouts. Overall, she has improved her record to 3-1 with 0.70 ERA.
Third baseman Dylinn Stancil was 2-for-2 today and batted .500 for the tournament. She owns a team-high .514 batting average through the first two weeks of the season.
"I am really proud of the way we played overall this weekend," head coach Jimmy Kolaitis said. "We had some ups and downs, but we definitely played hard and competed. I told our club these two games were going to be a dog fight against a solid McNeese State club. We lost a tough one last night but came back today and showed a lot of resiliency."
Woodham found herself in a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, but worked out of it and was assisted by a great catch in left field Faith Hegh to keep the game scoreless.
"Defensively we were outstanding all weekend. We made some big time plays which allowed us to close out some big innings."
It took the Blazers until the fourth inning to break the scoreless tie, and it was redshirt Analyse Petree who had the big hit with a two-out single up the middle which scored Hegh.
The only other run of the game came one inning later as Natalie Erwin launched a solo shot over the center field wall for her second of the season and 16th of her career. Erwin is now tied for seventh at UAB for career home runs.
"Amy gave us one heck of a performance in the circle with a two-hit complete game shutout. Our offense made some great adjustments against a pitcher that just got done shutting out Texas A&M. We 100 percent bought into the approach which helped us score late in the game."
