FLORENCE, Ala. – The UAB softball team scored four runs in the sixth inning to rally past North Alabama 4-2 on Wednesday night in Florence.
After being held to one hit through the first five innings, UAB (11-10) came to life in the sixth by scoring its four runs on three hits to seize the victory.
KK Crocker led off the inning with a walk, which was followed by a single from Conference USA's third leading hitter Dylinn Stancil. Sierra Frazier then walked to load the bases, and two batters later Jenna Olszewski roped a two-RBI double to tie the game at 2-2.
Ashton Clem then came to the plate and her RBI groundout scored Frazier for the game winning run. Faith Hegh added an insurance run in the next at bat as her single scored Olszewski to give UAB a 4-2 advantage.
"I am really proud of the way we competed today," head coach Jimmy Kolaitis said. "We knew we were in for a battle with their starting pitcher Megan Garst. She is a front line arm who knows how to compete. Sarah Cespedes came into the game and worked out of a few jams to give us a chance to win.
"Offensively, we had the one inning where we really grinded out at bats throughout the lineup. Everyone competed and battled to move the line and get to the next hitter. At the end of the day, it's about finding a way to win and we did that today. Late in the game we made the pitches, found ways to score and played some shut down defense."
UNA (12-7) got on the board in the second inning and added another run in the fifth on an RBI triple from Danielle de Ruiter.
Sarah Cespedes was excellent in the circle for the Blazers. She worked five inning in relief, allowing just four hits, one run and striking out eight batters. Cespedes picked up her third win of the season and neutralized the Lions for the final five innings of the game.
UAB is back in action this weekend when the Blazers host their second tournament of the season. UAB welcomes Colgate, Furman and Jacksonville to Mary Bowers Field. The tournament begins Friday morning. Click here for a full schedule of games.
