Big 3rd Quarter Leads Mercer Over UAB 71-62

MACON, Ga. – Mercer's Jaron Dougherty scored 11 of her game-high 28 points in the 3rd quarter to lead the Bears to a 71-62 victory over UAB on Sunday afternoon. Mercer outscored UAB 29-9 in the 3rd quarter, making 11 of its 17 attempts.
Emily Klaczek led the Blazers (6-4) with 17 points, one short of tying her career-high. Margaret Whitley added 13 points and Kylee Schneringer 10 points. Zakyia Weathersby recorded a double-double of 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, surpassing the 500 mark for her career.
The teams started off cold, combining for 2-of-17 shots to begin the contest. Four ties and five scoring changes later, Klaczek's driving layup at the buzzer gave UAB a 14-12 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.
With the Blazers ahead 21-16, Mercer went on a 9-0 run to take a 25-21 lead at the 4:06 mark of the 2nd quarter. UAB responded by closing out on a 13-0 run started by back-to-back 3-pointers by Schneringer and Whitley and capped by another Klaczek buzzer beater to take a 34-25 lead into halftime.
Mercer started the 3rd quarter with three consecutive baskets to cut the deficit to three points at 34-31. They would take the lead on a Amoria Neal-Tysor layup at 4:07 and hold the lead the rest of the game.
The Bears' lead would get as many as 13 points at the 8:34 mark of the 4th quarter, but an 11-0 run by UAB made it a one-possession game at 58-56 at 5:19. UAB battled, making it a two-possession game with 20 seconds remaining, but Mercer would make four free throwns down the stretch.
The Blazers return home on Dec. 21 to face Grambling State (2-7) for an 11 a.m. tipoff. The Lady Tigers have dropped seven straight games and are coming off an 82-58 loss at Auburn on Dec. 18.
