GAINESVILLE – UAB Cross Country concluded the 2023 season under the tutelage of new leadership, under new conference alignment, and with new faces to add to the roster. The Blazers finished their final race at the NCAA South Regional Championship in Gainesville early Friday morning, bringing their season to a close.
Six Blazers finished with a personal best in the Women's 6K.
Kyra Hayes was the first to cross the finish line, setting a personal best with a 21:05.6. Following Hayes, Kathleen Schellman also set a personal record in the 6K, with a time of 22:13.1.
Lidia Longo and Anna Behmer followed Schellman, with Longo racing in her second 6K of her career, beating her prior personal best by over a minute. Behmer finished with a 22:30.4, beating out last year's by two minutes. Sangie Lincoln-Velez followed with a PR of 22:30.6, along with Lia Castillo beating her prior record at the AAC Championships with a 22:46.
The Green and Gold conclude the season with over 15 personal bests throughout the season between the newcomers and returners. Two finishes as a team in the top twenty came about for the Green and Gold. One Blazer finished in the top ten, in addition to three more Blazers finishing top-25.
While the cross country season comes to an end, the 2023-24 season for Track and Field is nearly underway, starting in December. Cross country will return to action competing in distance for the Blazers on December 1 at the Birmingham Crossplex.
