Seb Cave; UAB Men’s Golf Wins Graeme McDowell Invitational

BIRMINGHAM – Led by freshman Seb Cave who won the individual title, the UAB men's golf team captured the 2023 Graeme McDowell Invitational team title on Tuesday at Limestone Springs Golf Club.
Cave, who was playing in his first collegiate tournament, won the event at -10. Cave and Lamar's David Jarez each shot -10, but Cave defeated Jarez in a one-hole playoff for the individual title. Cave shot an opening round 68 (-4), followed by a 66 (-6) in the second round and an even par 72 in the final round for a total of 206 (-10).
UAB had three Blazers finish inside the top five, including sophomore John Bruce and senior Khavish Varadan who each tied for 4th at -8.
Bruce (72-67-69 = 208) set collegiate bests for low 18 (round two 67) and low 54 (208), while notching the first top finish of his career.
Varadan (74-65-69 = 208) was two over after the first round but fired his second 65 of the season in the second round and finished off the tournament with a three under 69 in the final round. Varadan has now shot -11 and -8 in his first two tournaments of the season.
UAB was in sixth place after the first round as a team but caught fire in the second round and tied for the second lowest round in school history by shooting a 268 (-20), which catapulted the Blazers into first place by eight strokes. Varadan (65, -7), Cave (66, -6), John Bruce (67, -5) and Paul Bruce (70, -2) combined for the second lowest round in school history.
UAB's B Team finished 11th overall and was led by Price Brown who placed 11th overall and was the leader in the clubhouse after a collegiate career low 66 (-6) in the first round.
The Blazers have now placed first in both tournament they have played this season and improved their overall record to 26-0-2 on the season.
UAB looks to keep its momentum going at the Carolina Cup which is set for Oct. 8-10 in Spartanburg, S.C., hosted by USC Upstate.
