Blazers Battle at JSU Southern Showcase

HUNTSVILLE - The UAB Cross Country team battled through a tough field of opponents this morning at the JSU Southern Showcase at John Hunt Cross Country Park in Huntsville.
"I think we had a solid race," said head coach Travis Pope. "We put ourselves in a good spot from the start and ran well as a team. (We are) still looking at putting a few pieces together, but definitely a step in the right direction as we get into the meat of the season."
The Blazers finished 18th out of 49 teams. Katie Keur led the Blazers with a 63rd overall finish with a time of 17:56.
Lia Castillo followed with a time of 18:49, placing 156th, while Lidia Longo had a standout performance, setting a new PR by 43 seconds with a time of 19:00, finishing 177th. Anna Behmer came in 186th with a time of 19:07, and Kyra Hayes was close behind in 191st place with a time of 19:10.
Kaitlyn Wende also had a personal best, breaking her PR by 32 seconds with a time of 19:18, finishing 201st. Sangie Lincoln-Velez rounded out the team's scoring with a time of 19:43, finishing 236th. Kenlie Nelson and Ariana Felton also competed, with Nelson achieving a PR by 37 seconds. Ava Brooks and Hannah Stevens did not finish.
The Blazers are back in action on Friday, September 27th as they travel to Tallahassee, Florida to participate in the FSU Pre-Regional at Apalachee Regional Park. The women's 5K race is set to begin at 8:20 a.m. EDT.
