Softball Splits Double Header at Memphis

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Softball team (14-19, 4-7) split a double-header against Memphis (15-19, 4-7) 5-4 in the first game and 6-2 in the second game.
GAME 1
UAB took an early lead scoring their 37th first inning run. Hope Tucker hit a hard ball to second base for her 17th RBI of the year that scored Lindsey Smith. Three up, three down for the Blazers in the first inning.
McLendon retired all three batters in the second inning with two strikeouts.
Two errors in the third inning helped UAB score two runs in the third inning. Bella Wiggins came around to score and Ashlyn Shirah hit a sacrifice fly. The Blazers led 3-0 after three innings.
The Tigers finally got on the board in the fourth inning after one hit and two walks. Lindsey Smith Scored on a fielding error by the right fielder that added to the UAB lead.
Memphis scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game. Caitlin Russell made her fifth appearance of the year coming in relief for McLendon.
No one scored in innings seven or eight, but in the eighth Britt Bourgoyne was left on third base. A single through the middle scored the game winning run for Memphis winning 5-4 over UAB.
GAME 2
Another first inning run in game two of the double header against Memphis. Wiggins hit an inside the park home run, just beating the tag at home. This was her first home run of the season. Two batters later Lindsey Smith stepped up and banged a triple to right field to score another run. Lindsey Smith surpassed 100 career RBIs with that triple. Memphis also added a run in the first inning, which made the score 2-1 Blazers.
An obstruction call at the plate scored Wiggins and Hannah Miles scored on a wild pitch in the third inning. After Memphis added a run in the fourth inning, UAB led 4-2. Hannah Miles scored on another wild pitch in the fifth inning.
Another run came on a fielding error by Tulsa, which was their seventh error of the day. Miles and Smith both had two hits in game two, while UAB scored six runs on six hits.
The Blazers are back in action tomorrow for the season finale against Memphis at 6:00 p.m.
