Blazers Drop High-Scoring Affair to East Carolina

BIRMINGHAM - UAB (19-19, 4-9) had no problem getting runners on base on Thursday night but were unable to cash in as East Carolina (23-16, 8-5) took game one of the 3-game series by a score of 12-7. The Blazers left 12 runners on base.

ECU got the scoring started in the top half of the 1st when Colby Wallace hit a two-out home run to left field to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

The scoring continued for the Pirates in the top half of the 2nd. Austin Irby doubled down the left field line to score Walker Barron. Two batters later, Alex Bouche singled through the left side to plate Irby. The next batter was Braden Burress who hit a chopper off the pitcher's glove for an infield single to score Alex Peltier and give ECU a 3-0 advantage. The Pirate rally continued as Jack Herring singled up the middle to score Bouche as ECU put up four runs in the 2nd inning and took a 5-0 lead.

The Green and Gold started a rally of their own in the bottom of the 2nd. After back-to-back walks by John Paul Head and Jaden Anderson, Logan Braunschweig came to the dish. With a full count and two outs, Braunschweig sent a 3-run home run over the right field wall to cut the deficit to 5-3.

The Blazers continued their run in the bottom half of the 4th. Nick Hollifield roped a double down the right field line to score Wesley Helms all the way from first to cut the ECU lead to 5-4.

East Carolina started a new run in the top of the 6th. Burress singled to score Bouche and Peltier to increase the Pirate lead to 7-4.

With the bases loaded in the top of the 7th, Peltier was hit by pitch to give ECU an 8-4 lead. Then, Bouche singled up the middle to plate Barron and John Collins.

The Pirates scored their final two runs of the night on a Barron 2 RBI single up the middle to give ECU a 12-4 advantage.

The Blazer bats mounted another rally in the bottom half of the 8th when Todd Clay sent a 2-run home run to straight-away center field to cut the deficit to 12-6.

UAB's final run of the evening came on Head's single through the right side to score Alex Cheeseman to conclude the scoring and the Blazers fell 12-7.

Ethan Young came on in relief for the Pirates as he tossed 5.2 innings and struck out six. Colby Wallace picked up the final three outs.

NOTES

Todd Clay picked up his 12th multi-hit game of the season. It was the third time this season Clay has recorded three hits in a game.
Clay also upped his hitting streak to five games. He also tallied his team-leading 10th multi-RBI game this season.
Logan Braunschweig reached base safely for the 66th consecutive game.
Nick Hollifield has now reached base safely in 17 straight games. Hollifield also picked up his 11th multi-hit game this season.
John Paul Head recorded his first career two-hit game.

The Blazers and Pirates square off for game two of the series tomorrow night. First pitch from Young Memorial Field will be at 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
