UAB Splits Double Header Against ECU

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The UAB Softball team (23-27, 9-14) split the double header against ECU (26-24, 11-12) winning game two 9-8. Game one ended with a 10-3 win for ECU.
GAME 1
The first nine batters were retired before the first hit of the game by Lindsey Smith in the second inning. Hannah Dorsett Scored the first run of the game on an error by ECU. Lindsey Smith drove in Hannah Miles on an RBI single to shortstop. East Carolina immediately answered back in the top of the fourth inning with two runs. The Pirates hit back-to-back home runs to tie the game at 2-2. Britt Bourgoyne grabbed another unearned run on a fielding error by the third baseman.
East Carolina hit another home run in the fifth inning and continued the scoring in the sixth. Logan Sutton hit an RBI single to score Masingale. ECU also scored on a passed ball in the sixth inning to give the Pirates a 5-3 lead. The Blazers were retired in order in the sixth inning.
ECU put the nail in the coffin by scoring five runs in the seventh inning. The Pirates hit six home runs in the first game, scoring 10 runs and winning 10-3. Lindsey Smith went two for four in game one.
GAME 2
Inning one started off with a bang when Hope Tucker singled through the left side to score Wiggins. UAB continues to score in first innings with another one in this game. ECU has answered every punch that has been thrown their way including in the second inning when two doubles scored a run. The game was tied at 1-1 after two innings of play.
UAB left the bases loaded twice in game two, once in the second and once in the third. In the third inning three walks loaded the bases. The game really opened in the fifth inning, starting with a run scored by ECU because of an obstruction call at the plate. ECU led 3-1 after the top of the inning. The bases were once again loaded in the game, but this time the Blazers capitalized. Alyssa Aguilar grabbed an RBI walk to start the scoring followed by a throwing error by the third baseman to score Lindsey Smith. AJ Kramer stepped up and hit a pinch hit single to score Auburn Dupree. Wiggins hit a double to score Kailey Collett who pinch ran earlier. Miles, Tucker, Smith, and Shirah all hit RBI singles. This gave UAB a 9-3 lead headed into the sixth.
Anna Sawyer started the sixth inning with a solo home run and then three straight walks loaded the bases. Emma Jackson went on to hit a grand slam for ECU to close the gap to one run. UAB closed out game two retiring three straight batters. McLendon records the save while Caitlin Russell grabs her fourth win of the season.
The Blazers are back to conclude the series against East Carolina tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. for senior day!
