TAMPA – The UAB Softball team (24-31) dropped a first-round game at the AAC Tournament against Memphis (20-35) Wednesday afternoon in Tampa, Florida.
Both teams put together a string of hits in the first inning to score a total of three runs. Memphis was the visiting team as the lower seed. They scored two runs on two RBI singles. Lindsey Smith started the scoring for UAB with an RBI single to left field.
Caitlin Russell came into pitch in the second inning and only allowed two batters in 4.0 innings pitched. She pitched a total of 6.0 innings in the game. UAB left the bases loaded two times in the game, in the first and sixth inning. Tucker and Miles were left on in the third inning before two straight fly outs to end the inning.
The fourth inning saw all six batters that came to the plate retired in order. The Blazers loaded the bases in the sixth inning with an error, a single, and a walk.
Memphis blew the game open in the seventh inning when they scored four runs on four hits. The Tigers had a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the inning. UAB got three walks to load the bases with two outs. Shirah then reached on a fielding error to score two runs. A couple of seniors Alyssa Aguilar and Makenzie Droddy hit RBI singles that scored two more runs. That made the score 5-6 with Britt Bourgoyne up to bat. Because of her speed she made a close play at first, grounding out to shortstop.
UAB is now 8-10 in one run ball games including tonight's game against Memphis.
Memphis will move on to play East Carolina tonight at 7:00 p.m. ET for a spot in the quarterfinals.
UAB concluded a season where they won more games than last year and improved in categories such as: batting average, hits, extra base hits, home runs, and slugging %.
