BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's soccer (6-5-1, 3-1-0 American) scored three times in a 13-minute span in the second half to earn a 3-0 shutout victory over North Texas (4-5-3, 0-2-2 American) on Thursday night at PNC Field.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Avery Berryman broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute before Lailah Stewart struck twice to put the match away. Berryman finished with a goal and two assists, while Stewart recorded her first brace of the season.
Neither side was able to find the back of the net in the opening half. UAB's best opportunity came in the 26th minute when Stewart stepped to the penalty spot, but her attempt missed. The Blazers recorded three shots in the first half while North Texas tallied four as the teams entered halftime scoreless.
UAB's attack came alive shortly after the break. Morgan Goehring set up Berryman for the opening goal at the 51:51 mark, giving Berryman her fifth goal of the season. Less than six minutes later, Berryman turned provider, assisting Stewart's goal in the 58th minute to double the advantage.
The duo connected again at 64:11 as Berryman assisted Stewart for her second goal of the night and fourth of the season, pushing the Blazers' lead to 3-0. UAB's defense took care of the rest, holding the Mean Green off the board to secure the clean sheet.
Goalkeeper Macie Murphy made five saves to earn the shutout and improve to 5-2-1 on the season. Stewart led UAB with six shots, including three on goal, while Berryman put both of her attempts on target. UAB finished with seven shots on goal compared to five for North Texas and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The win marked UAB's third conference victory through its first four league matches.
