HOOVER, Ala. – The UAB volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over Charlotte on Friday night at Hoover High School.
Charlotte jumped out to an early 9-5 lead in the opening set before a 5-0 run extended the 49ers' advantage to 14-7. The Blazers fought back with a late 4-0 run, but Charlotte held on to take the first set, 25-17.
The 49ers again grabbed an early lead in the second set, going up 5-1. UAB responded, battling back to even the score at nine before rattling off five consecutive points to take a 14-9 advantage. Charlotte answered with a six-point run to reclaim the lead, but the Blazers closed strong, using a 6-3 run to secure a 25-22 win and even the match at one set apiece.
UAB took control in the third set, racing out to a 7-0 lead and never looking back. The Blazers extended their advantage to 12 at 18-6 following a Kennedy Vaughn kill. Kills from Makayla Meister and Rachel McCollum helped seal the 25-14 set victory and give UAB a 2-1 match lead.
The Blazers carried that momentum into the fourth set, opening up a 10-5 advantage behind another Vaughn kill. UAB maintained control throughout the set before a block from Mia Reese and Sydney Austin secured a 25-19 victory and clinched the match.
Vaughn led three Blazers in double figures with 16 kills, followed by Reese with 15 and Meister with 12. McCollum recorded a double-double with 42 assists and 13 digs, while Reese added 14 digs to her 15-kill performance for a double-double of her own.
