Blazers Split Day Two at Mardi Gras Classic

MOBILE, Ala. - Blazer Softball had a day of high-highs and low-lows, falling to Jacksonville State in five innings 9-1, but defeating Western Michigan 4-3 to secure a win against each team at the Mardi Gras Classic. Charlee Bennett was a star again for the Blazers with a 3-for-3 game against Western Michigan, doubling twice.

Jacksonville State's offense ate up Caroline McLendon and Tait Davidson with big innings in the second and fifth to run-rule the Blazers.

Bennett and Hannah Dorsett led the UAB offense, paired with another strong Olivia Cummings start and capped with a Caitlin Russell save. The Blazers fended off a late Western Michigan comeback attempt to split the day and improve to 3-1 on the weekend.

Notables

Bennett reached base four times against Western Michigan with three hits, including two doubles.
Bennett is the first UAB freshman to hit multiple doubles in a game since Lindsey Smith's two doubles against Marshall on March 19, 2022.
Russell recorded the first save of the season for UAB. It was her fourth career save.

GAME ONE
The Play-by-Play

UAB wasted big opportunities early, stranding two runners on in both the first and second innings.
Jacksonville State used back-to-back walks and a single to load the bases against McLendon.
The Gamecocks walked again to break the scoring seal (0-1).
Jacksonville State's next batter powered a homer to left center field, scoring all four runners (0-5).
The Blazers left a pair stranded again in the third inning, but finally broke through in the fourth, loading the bases and scoring on Abbi Perkins' second hit-by-pitch of the day (1-5). UAB, once again, left runners on base with the bases loaded.
Tait Davidson pitched a strong 2.1 innings in relief before Jacksonville State led off the fifth inning with a single and a walk.
A pair of walks and doubles drove in the four runs Jacksonville State needed to clinch the run rule (1-9).

Stat Lines

Carlie Wilkins went 2-for-2 and scored the Blazers' only run.
Hannah Dorsett doubled and walked, extending her on-base streak to eight games.
UAB drew four walks, coming from Dorsett, Benntt, Shirah, and Miles.
Perkins reached twice on a pair of hit-by-pitches.

McLendon got the start in her hometown, going 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and five runs, all earned.
McLendon walked four batters and did not strike anyone out.
Davidson relieved McLendon with a strong first 2.1 innings, not allowing any runs and just two runners. The Gamecocks blew up the fifth innings, leaving Davidson with four earned runs on four hits and four walks to finish the game.

GAME TWO
The Play-by-Play

UAB did not waste any time in the second game of the day with Dorsett singling to lead off, followed by a Bennett double to drive in Dorsett (1-0).
Bennett scored later in the inning on a Shirah groundball (2-0).
Cummings continued her season-long dominance with five consecutive clean innings, allowing just four base runners in the opening five innings.
UAB added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning as Dorsett and Bennett each reached again to lead off the inning. Dorsett scored on an RBI walk by Flammia; Bennett scored on a Kaily Collett sacrifice fly (4-0).
Western Michigan pieced together a strong inning in the sixth, with three consecutive hits to score their first run of the game (4-1).
An RBI groundball and RBI single up the middle pulled the Broncos within one run (4-3), but Cummings managed her way out of the inning with the lead.
Russell relieved Cummings in the seventh inning, working a quick inning with a popout and back-to-back groundouts to end the game.

Stat Lines

Bennett was the star of the game for the Blazers, reaching four times with two doubles, a single, and a walk. Bennett's RBI double in the first inning got the scoring going for UAB.
Dorsett recorded a pair of hits and scored twice.
Perkins and Collett each went 1-for-2 with a walk. Collett also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
