Blazers Drop Home Opener to West Georgia in 11 Innings

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB Softball lost its home opener after an 11-inning marathon against West Georgia, 6-4. The Blazers erased a 4-1 West Georgia lead with a three-run sixth inning. Neither team scored for four innings before West Georgia broke through with a pair of runs in the 11th inning.

The 11-inning game is the longest UAB game since Feb. 20, 2022 vs Murray State (12.0 innings).

Notables

Ashlyn Shirah singled in the sixth inning, extending her on-base streak to 22 games.
Abbi Perkins walked four times, the fourth time a player has done so in UAB history. It ties the single-game NCAA high so far this season.
Perkins extended her on-base streak to 11 games.

Play-by-Play

West Georgia started the scoring with back-to-back doubles in the first inning (0-1).
The Blazers responded with a Shirah sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to score Dorsett (1-1).
West Georgia regained the lead after a hit batter reached second base on a wild pitch before being driven in on an RBI single (1-2).
The Wolves added to their lead with a towering two-run home run to left field (1-4).
UAB led off its sixth inning comeback with a Perkins walk and Shirah single. Kaily Collett was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
A pitch to the back stop forced an errant throw from the West Georgia catcher, allowing pinch runner Jaycee Holt to score (2-4).
Wilkins followed the error with a single up the middle to drive in two runs to tie the game (4-4).
Davidson shut down the West Georgia offense with three consecutive three-up-three-down innings. Meanwhile, UAB failed to string multiple baserunners together. With neither offense clicking, the game trickled to the 11th inning.
West Georgia got two runners aboard thanks to a walk and an errant throw on a fielder's choice. After a UAB pitched change and another UAB error, the Wolves had bases loaded with just one out. Two consecutive Caitlin Russell walks drove in a pair of runs (4-6).
With two outs in the 11th inning, UAB got a lifeline with Charlee Bennett reaching on an error. Perkins walked for the fourth after an 11-pitch at bat. A groundout to third base ended the Blazers' final comeback attempt.

Russell entered the game for Davidson with two runners on base. Russell walked two of the four batters she faced, both of whom scored runs for West Georgia, giving West Georgia the lead.
