HATTIESBURG, Miss. - UAB Softball opened the 2026 season with a split day in Hattiesburg. The Blazers fell to Lipscomb in a tight 5-2 battle before coming back to run-rule SEMO.

UAB's newcomers proved to fit in immediately as Abbi Perkins and Madeline Flammia each stood out in the box scores. Perkins reached three times against Lipscomb and recorded two RBI against SEMO, cementing her spot in the heart of the lineup for the near future. After notching her first career hit against Lipscomb, Flammia recorded a pair of hits and two RBI against SEMO, including the walk-off RBI.

The Blazers' returners also showed up on opening day as Ashlyn Shirah, Hannah Dorsett, and Hannah Miles all tallied three hits and an RBI on Friday.

On the rubber, Olivia Cummings got her season off to a hot start with a complete game win over SEMO, allowing just four batters to reach base in the win.

UAB tallied 14 hits against SEMO, the most for the Blazers since Apr. 11 at UTSA (14).

Notables

Flammia recorded her first career hit vs Lipscomb.
Transfers Abbi Perkins, Ansley Eason, and Jaycee Holt each tallied their first hits at Blazers against Lipscomb.
Charlee Bennett made her collegiate debut vs Lipscomb, filling in at second base for Eason, she did not have a plate appearance in the game.
Bennett started and recorded her first career hit against SEMO.
Cummings' four strikeouts against SEMO were tied for the second most of her career.

GAME ONE
The Play by Play

T2 | Two of the Blazers' transfers, Perkins and Eason, reached to open the inning, but a sac bunt and a pair of groundouts stranded both Blazers.
B3 | Lipscomb opened the scoring with a deep home run off the left field foul pole (0-1).
B3 | The Bisons continued the rally with a single and triple to score the second run of the inning (0-2).
T4| Perkins led off the inning with her first hit as a Blazer, doubling to center field. Flammia's first career hit moved Perkins to third base. However, a Carlie Wilkins grounder to short turned into an inning-ending double play.
B4 | Lipscomb tacked onto their lead with an RBI groundout to score their leadoff double (0-3).
B4 | Three consecutive Bisons reached safely, working a runner around to put up another two-spot in the inning (0-4).
T5 | Holt singled for her first hit as a Blazer to lead off the inning. Hope Tucker moved Holt into scoring position with a single to second base. Ashlyn Shirah singled to right to score Holt. An overthrow by the right fielder allowed Tucker to score on the play, cutting the Lipscomb lead in half (2-4).
B5 | Lipscomb loaded the bases with just one out, then lined a ball above Dorsett's head, but Dorsett climbed the ladder to save multiple runs, doubling off the runner at second to end the inning.
B6 | The Bisons walked to lead off the inning, then worked the runner to third base with a sac bunt and a ground ball. Lipscomb singled to left center score another insurance run heading into the seventh inning (2-5).
T7 | UAB went three-up-three-down in the inning to end the game.

Stat Lines

Perkins shone in her Blazer debut, reaching in all three plate appearances. The Jacksonville State transfer walked in her first plate appearance, then sent a double over the head of the Lipscomb center fielder. Perkins was hit in the foot to reach base for the third time.
Miles recorded the first hit of the season for UAB, totaling two on the day. Miles also stole a base, the first of the year for UAB.
Shirah tallied the only RBI of the game for UAB.

In the Circle

Tait Davidson was charged with the loss, allowing two runs, both earned, on four hits in 2.1 innings. Davidson walked one Bison and struck out two.
Caitin Russell relieved Davidson in the third inning. Russell allowed six hits and walked two hitters. Lipscomb scored three times while Russell was on the rubber, two of which were earned.

T3 | SEMO opened the scoring in the third, tripling to deep center field to score a prior walk (0-1).
T3 | The next Redhawk batter rolled over to second base, enough to drive in the triple (0-2).
B3 | UAB responded in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff walk by Holt and pushing her around the bases to score (1-2).
B4 | The Blazers put up back-to-back-back three spots in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Perkins started the fourth-inning rally, walking to leadoff. Flammia notched her first-career extra-base hit, doubling to right center, driving Perkins to third. Wilkins singled up the middle to score Perkins. An error on the play allowed Flammia to score to give UAB the lead (3-2).
B4 | A pair of Blazers pushed Wilkins over to third, allowing Dorsett to drive Wilkins in (4-2).
B5 | Miles and Shirah led off the inning, each with infield singles. Flammia drove in Miles with her second hit of the day, singling through the middle (5-2).
B5 | Wilkins followed with another RBI single, scoring Shirah while putting Flammia in scoring position (6-2).
B5 | Bennett singled for her first career hit, loading the bases for Holt. The UMES transfer, Holt, delivered her first RBI as a Blazer, singling to score Flammia (7-2).
B6 | UAB's chance to run rule the Redhawks arose quickly in the sixth with Hope Tucker leading off the inning with a single and Miles reaching on an error by SEMO. A double steal by Tucker and Miles put both runners in scoring position.
B6 | Perkins delivered with a towering double off the top of the wall, scoring both runners. Perkins reached third on the play (9-2).
B6 | Flammia did her job, putting the ball in play, grounding to second base with just one out to score Perkins and put the Blazers up eight, eclipsing the run-rule (10-2).
