UAB Earns Overtime Road Win at Memphis, 79-76

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – UAB women's basketball (11-18, 4-13 American) defeated Memphis (9-21, 3-14 American) 79-76 in overtime on Wednesday night at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. This was the first time UAB has beaten the Tigers in Memphis, Tenn., since 2011.

Four Blazers scored in double figures with Molly Moffitt leading UAB with 23 points and 16 rebounds for her second career double-double. Sofia Munoz registered 20 points and eight assists. Cali Smallwood tallied 12 points and Monae' Duffy totaled 11 points.

Memphis was led by Daejah Richmond with 23 points. Tamya Smith recorded 17 points and 11 rebounds while Jordan Hunter came away with 14 points.

Game Notes

Moffitt led the Green and Gold with 23 points and a career-best 16 rebounds for her second career double-double.
Moffitt also matched her career-high nine field goals.
Munoz led the Blazers with eight assists and added 20 points, orchestrating the UAB offense.
The Green and Gold scored 28 points in the paint and 21 points off 10 of the Tigers turnovers.
During the game there were eight lead changes and four tied scores.
Munoz sent the game into overtime by making all three of her free throws to tie the game.
UAB outscored Memphis 11-8 in overtime to seal the win.
The Blazers led for 34:16 of the contest compared to 7:07 for the Tigers.
This was the second game this season that UAB went into overtime (Dec. 30 at East Carolina).
UAB shot 45 percent overall, 55 percent from the three and 82 percent at the line.
Memphis shot 41 percent from the field, 38 percent from the perimeter and 71 percent at the free throw line.

How It Happened

The Blazers started the game strong scoring the first eight points [8-0].
UAB's defense held the Tigers to only three points with 3:17 remaining in the quarter [14-3].
Moffitt and Munoz knocked down threes to stretch the lead [21-8]
The Green and Gold closed the quarter with an 11-point lead [21-10].
Memphis responded with a strong push, using transition opportunities to cut into the lead [21-15].
Jordan Rosier hit a key three to keep UAB ahead midway through the quarter [26-20].
Eleecia Carter buried back-to-back threes to halt the Tigers run late in the period [33-26].
The Blazers had a two-point lead going into halftime [35-33].
Memphis surged out of halftime and briefly grabbed the lead behind efficient shooting [45-44].
Moffitt answered with a paint bucket and Munoz with a three to give UAB the lead [49-45].
The Tigers were able to tie the game with a fast break layup [49-49].
Memphis closed the quarter on a basket at the buzzer to lead heading into the fourth [51-49].
Smallwood and Munoz connected from deep and the paint to help UAB regain control [54-53].
The teams traded baskets throughout the final minutes, but the Tigers had a five-point lead with 1:03 remaining [68-63].
Munoz connected a shot in the paint to cut into the deficit [68-65].
Munoz was fouled in the final second shooting a three and made all three of her free throws to send the game into overtime [68-68].
Smallwood, Moffitt and Munoz delivered key baskets early in the extra period [75-72].
The Blazers converted free throws and late possessions to maintain the lead.
UAB's defense held off the Tigers in the final seconds to earn the win [79-76].
