Blazers Open Conference Play With Loss to North Texas, Weekend Schedule Updated

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB Softball fell in its American Conference opener to North Texas, 5-2. The Mean Green strung hits together at the right time, while taking advantage of a couple of UAB errors and riding their pitching duo.
North Texas struck early, doubling to right field to score a runner who was in scoring position after an Ashlyn Shirah error in left field. The Mean Green added to its lead with a two-run homer in the third.
UAB gained life in the fourth inning with an Abbi Perkins leadoff single for her second hit of the game. Hope Tucker and Carlie Wilkins both walked to load the bases. Madeline Flammia singled on the first pitch down the left field line, scoring both Perkins and Tucker. A flyout and groundball ended the inning to leave two runners stranded.
The Blazers were held hitless for the final three innings, only reaching on a hit-by-pitch and two walks, all in separate innings.
North Texas added insurance with a pair of runs in the sixth. With runners on first and second, North Texas singled to score the first run of the inning. Then, with two outs, a UAB error allowed the batter to reach safely and score the Mean Green's second run.
A 4-6-3 double play ended the game, sending the Blazers home with a 0-1 record to start conference play.
The remainder of the series will be played in a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Game two will follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
