Memphis Prevails over UAB on Saturday

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Baseball (27-16, 11-6) dropped the middle game of the series to Memphis (16-25, 8-9) on Saturday afternoon, 13-9. Despite being outscored, the Blazers outhit the Tigers, 15-14.
Memphis jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning as the first four Tigers reached base safely. Brady McAbee pushed the first run across on a single up the middle followed by a hit by James Smith IV through the right side. Two batters later, Michael Gupton brought home McAbee on an RBI groundout to give Memphis a 3-0 lead through one inning.
The Blazers responded with two runs in the bottom of the second. After back-to-back singles by Alex Dupuy and Brady Waugh, Wesley Helms brought them both home on a double to cut the Tigers' lead to 3-2.
The Tigers got the two runs back in their half of the third on Shane Cox's fifth home run of the season to inflate Memphis' lead back to three.
UAB's big inning of the day came in the bottom of the third with four runs crossing the plate. A leadoff single followed by a double put two runners in scoring position for Alex Dupuy who brought John Paul Head and Landon Beaver home on a double to cut Memphis' lead to one. Two batters later, Andrew Hunt tied the game on a single to right to score Dupuy. The Green and Gold would take their first lead of the game on a sac fly by Max Price which scored Brady Waugh to put UAB in front, 6-5.
Neither team scored in the middle three innings of the game.
Memphis scored eight runs in the final three innings of the game and began that stretch with a 4-run seventh inning. All four of the Tigers' runs in the inning were unearned after capitalizing on two UAB errors. After the first two runs scored on an errors, James Smith IV stepped in two batters later and singled in Javon Hernandez and Marcus Smith to give Memphis a 9-6 advantage.
UAB would respond with two runs in its half of the seventh. Max Price reached on a fielder's choice which scored Alex Dupuy, and Andrew Hunt later scored on a wild pitch to cut the Tigers' lead to one going into the eighth inning.
Freddy Rodriguez would come up with a clutch piece of hitting in the Tigers' eighth. On an 0-2 pitch with two outs, Rodriguez lined a single to right to score Michael Gupton and Tyler Harrington to extend Memphis' lead back to three.
The Blazers would get a single run on the board in the bottom half of the eighth inning. John Paul Head powered his 15th home run of the season to cut Memphis' lead to 11-9.
Two more runs scored for Memphis in the top of the ninth. Michael Gupton brought home Brady McAbee, and James Smith IV scored on a wild pitch to put Memphis up, 13-9.
The Green and Gold put a runner on in the bottom of the ninth but would be unable to mount a rally as Memphis forced a rubber game on Sunday.
NOTES
- Andrew Hunt led the Blazers with a career high four hits in Saturday's game. His four hits are the most in a single game since Todd Clay picked up four hits against Rice on April 26 of last season.
- Landon Beaver tied his career high with three hits including a career best two doubles.
- Alex Dupuy (15), John Paul Head (14), and Brady Waugh (13) each collected multi-hit games of their own.
- Wesley Helms extended his on-base streak to 30 consecutive games.
UAB and Memphis will square off in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. First pitch from Young Memorial Field is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
