HOUSTON, TX – UAB Baseball (28-18, 12-8) dropped both games of the doubleheader on Saturday as Rice outscored the Blazers 28-11 in two games. The Owls blasted eight home runs on the day.
GAME ONE
The Blazer bats got started early in game one on Saturday. Kevin Hall Jr. drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on an Alex Dupuy single to put UAB up, 1-0.
The Owls bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the first. Garret Boehm reached on an infield single and Landis Davila ripped a 2-run home run to give Rice a 3-1 advantage.
The Green and Gold would tie the game in the top of the fourth inning. Andrew Hunt hit his sixth home run of the season to bring home Brady Waugh to tie the game at three.
Rice jumped back in front in the bottom half of the fourth. JC Davis doubled home two runs which gave the Owls the lead back, 5-3.
Like he did in the fourth inning, Andrew Hunt tied the game again in the fifth inning. After a Brady Waugh double to cut the Rice lead to one, Hunt had a double of his own to score Waugh to tie the game at five apiece.
The Owls quickly regained the lead on Paul Smith's 10th home run of the year to give Rice a 6-5 lead.
Rice's big inning came in the bottom of the sixth when it pushed eight runs across the plate which included four home runs, including back-to-back-back home runs by Colin Robson, Garret Boehm, and Paul Smith. Kutter Gage Webb also homered to give Rice a 9-run advantage through six innings.
UAB would trim the deficit to eight on an Alex Dupuy opposite field home run for his seventh of the season in the top of the seventh inning.
The two teams would trade single runs in each of the final four frames of the game, which included Brady Waugh's fifth home run of the season in the top of the ninth inning, but it was not enough as Rice took game one, 16-9.
GAME TWO
The second game of the doubleheader was unfortunately more of the same as the first game of the day. It was Baylor Roberts' turn to jump on the hit train as the freshman shortstop singled in Andrew Hunt in the top of the second to give UAB a 1-0 lead.
The Owls' big inning came in the bottom of the third. After Colin Robson sandwiched a solo home run between a fly out and ground out, Rice struck for five two out runs in the inning, capitalizing on four straight walks, a single, and a double to inflate its lead to 6-1 through three innings.
The onslaught of runs continued in the fifth and sixth innings for Rice. Two run-scoring knocks by Zachary Daigre and a bases-loaded walk inflated the Owls' lead to 10-1 heading into the top of the seventh.
UAB would get a single run in the half inning on an Austin Pierzynski solo home run for his seventh home run of the season.
The Owls' prolific offensive day was capped off in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Paul Smith's RBI double and Garret Boehm's RBI single were enough to clinch the run-rule shortened victory for Rice, 12-2.
