BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - David Clemente recorded four saves and UAB scored two second-half goals to defeat South Florida 2-0 in Conference USA play Sunday afternoon at UAB's West Campus Field.
The Blazers have won four straight and are 8-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in C-USA. South Florida fell to 7-8 and 1-4 in the league.
Jermie Frankson broke up the defensive battle with a goal from in front at the 62:12 mark of the game. Frankson's goal came off a deflected Martin Rey pass. Frankson later had an assist on the second goal as Houston Smith scored on a header at the 70:31 point of the match.
The key to the game was Clemente. With UAB leading 1-0 Clemente stopped two close in shots within seconds of each other. After the Blazers finally gained control of the ball, South Florida was unable to attempt another shot the remainder of the game. Three of Clemente's saves came in the second half off six USF shots.
Both teams had nine shots each. The Bulls goalkeeper Troy Perkins recorded three saves, all in the first half.
UAB plays at Conference-USA foe Memphis, Wednesday night at 7 p.m. and plays at home next Sunday against Cincinnati.
