BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Christian Reimers belted a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the 11th and give UAB a 4-3 victory over crosstown rival Samford here Tuesday night at Young Memorial Field.
Reimers, who hit his second home run of the season, connected on a 1-0 pitch off reliever Matt Fields over the rightfield wall. The senior from Baroda, Mich., collected three hits for UAB (25-26), while Chris George had a game-high four for the Blazers and Brandon Isbell added a pair of safeties.
The Blazers won for the first time in six tries in extra innings this season, while Samford (19-32) is 1-2 when they go to extra frames.
It looked early as if the Blazers would cruise to the win as they jumped out to a 3-0 advantage.
Brandon Isbell got things going for UAB by blasting his third round-tripper of the season in the fourth, a solo shot to left, to get the Blazers on the board. Two innings later, Matt Gaulden delivered a two-run double to left center for the three-run advantage.
The Bulldogs, though, got two runs back in the seventh on a two-run single by Robert Evans and then tied the score one frame later on a RBI fielder's choice by Eric Hollis.
Fields, the fourth pitcher of the night for the Bulldogs, started the 11th and was tagged for the loss as his record dropped to 1-3.
Blake Allen, the third of UAB's hurlers on the night, tossed the final 3.1 innings and allowed just a hit and a walk while fanning three to be credited with the win and improve to 4-5. Jon Burgett got his first start of the season for the Blazers and threw to the minimum amount of hitters through the first five innings.
Burgett, who got touched in the seventh for Samford's first two runs, ended the night allowing six hits and a walk, while fanning six over 6.2 innings of work.
The Blazers return to action Wednesday in both their final non-conference and home game of the 2001 campaign when they take on Mississippi State. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. at Young Memorial Field.
