BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Junior Oswaldo Gallegos was named to Soccer America's National Team of the Week for his performance in UAB's 4-0 victory over then-conference leading Charlotte on Saturday, October 5. Head coach Mike Getman felt the honor was justified.
"I'm happy for Oswaldo and I thought he was very deserving of this honor," Getman said. "He came off the bench and really swung the momentum of the game in our favor. I'm glad he was nationally recognized for his efforts."
Gallegos, a junior from Houston, Texas, tallied a goal and an assist in the contest. His assist came on the game-winning goal in the 28th minute of the game. Gallegos was streaking down the right side of the field and, as the Charlotte goalkeeper came out to stop the attack, he flipped a pass to a wide-open Steven Sugar for the game's first goal.
Sugar then returned the favor when he fed a pass to Gallegos at midfield and he took it to goal. After his first shot attempt was blocked by the Charlotte goalkeeper, Gallegos gathered in the rebound and tucked it into the back of the net at the 89:22 mark.
The win propelled the Blazers back into the national rankings, coming in as the 25th-ranked team in the nation by College Soccer News.
This marks the first time this season a UAB men's soccer player has earned a national team of the week award.
