Volleyball Team Falls To UCF In Five Games

ORLANDO, Fla. - Central Florida (17-10, 9-0 Atlantic Sun) extended its winning streak to four matches, defeating UAB (10-17, 3-6 Conference USA) 31-29, 27-30, 30-18, 25-30, 15-8 in volleyball action Saturday afternoon at UCF Arena.
Three Blazers posted double-doubles in the match. Junior outside hitter Martina Shields recorded her team-leading 10th double-double of the season with 16 kills and 14 digs to go along with a .324 hitting percentage and three total blocks. Freshman outside hitter/right side hitter Breanne Swenson posted her fourth double-double of the season for UAB, as she had 16 kills and 16 digs, while hitting for .306 and posting four total blocks and three service aces. Senior middle blocker Samanta Tucillo also added a double-double for the Blazers with 14 kills and 10 digs to go along with a .345 hitting percentage. Senior setter Dina Katsoulis posted 55 assists and nine digs and senior middle blocker Allison Magner contributed 12 kills, seven digs and four total blocks.
"We had very solid offensive performances today," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "This was a very good match. I am very proud of the team's determination and heart. They just wouldn't give up. This was a very disappointing loss, but we competed well. It was such a close match. We will just have to keep fighting back and look towards our home matches next weekend."
Junior outside hitter Leyre Santaella Sante led the match in kills with 21 and added 10 digs and five service aces to go along with a .362 hitting percentage to lead UCF. Junior setter Jenny Frank added 61 assists, nine kills, three service aces and a .400 hitting percentage for the Golden Knights.
UAB next travels to Atlanta, Ga. to face Georgia State Tuesday at 7 p.m. (ET).
