Volleyball Team Tops Marquette 3-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB (12-17, 4-6 Conference USA) defeated Marquette (11-13, 2-9 C-USA) 28-30, 30-27, 30-26, 30-25 in Conference USA volleyball action Friday evening at Bartow Arena. With the victory, UAB clinched a berth in the Healthy Choice Conference USA Tournament, which will be held November 22-25 in Chicago.
Junior outside hitter Martina Shields posted her team-leading 12th double-double of the season with 23 kills and 13 digs to go along with a .422 hitting percentage and four total blocks for UAB. Senior setter Dina Katsoulis recorded her sixth double-double of the season, as she had 50 assists and 12 digs for the Blazers. Freshman outside hitter/right side hitter Breanne Swenson added 14 kills, five service aces and five digs for UAB.
"Tonight's performance was great from the standpoint that we have been working for a large part of the season on putting together a consistent match from a mental focus and sustaining our energy, our execution, and our focus, and tonight we did that," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "The team continued to fight and get better and better with every game tonight. That is definitely were we need to be at this point in the season. We will keep building off of that going into the conference tournament."
Marquette was led by freshman middle blocker Jessica Klein who had 15 kills. Junior setter Gemma Greer added 41 assists and 11 digs for the Golden Eagles.
UAB returns home to Bartow Arena Saturday to face DePaul (5-23, 1-10 C-USA) at 7:30 p.m.
