TROY, Ala. - The UAB Blazers split a doubleheader with Troy State in the season opener Saturday afternoon at the Troy State Softball Complex winning the first game 1-0 and falling short in the second, 1-0. The win marked the first lost for Troy State in a season opener.
In the first game, senior pitcher Megan Stephenson (Washington, Ill.) went the distance for UAB (1-1) throwing all seven innings. She allowed only two hits and had three strikeouts.
At the top of the third, Senior Kai Paul (Birmingham, Ala.) ripped a low pitch to left center to give the Blazers a leadoff double. Catcher Amanda Ellis (Axis, Ala.) singled to right field to drive Paul home for the only run of the game.
In game two, Troy's (1-1) run came in the bottom of the third inning on an error by Paul. Junior Kerri Foster (McCalla, Ala.) took the loss for UAB allowing five hits and recording three strikeouts.
The Blazers were given ample times to score with bases loaded twice in the first and fifth innings. They left seven runners on base.
"Pitching and defense played well enough to win both games," said Head Coach Marla Townsend. "I could tell that it was the first game of the season since only three players recorded hits in both games. We failed to execute with runners in scoring positions. I have confidence in our offense coming around."
UAB is up next at Georgia State for a doubleheader on Thursday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
