Softball Sweeps Lipscomb

Birmingham, Ala. - UAB (17-7) beat Lipscomb (6-16) this afternoon in both games. They won 8-2 in the first game and 9-0 in the second.
The Blazers scored in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Kai Paul (Birmingham, Ala.) led off the inning with a home run to right center, 1-0. Sophomore catcher Amanda Ellis (Axis, Ala.) scored on a single by junior Candice Hithe (Daphne, Ala.), 2-0.
UAB added another run in the third inning when sophomore Beth Mullins (Fairhope, Ala.) stole home after she singled to lead off the inning, 3-0.
In the fifth inning, the Blazers added two more runs when Ellis singled to center field to bring in Mullins and Amber Rouse (Morris, Ala.), who pinch ran for Paul.
Lipscomb fought back in the top of the sixth inning when they scored two runs off three hits, 5-2.
Sophomore outfielder Emily Scarbrough (Ooltewah, Tenn.) scored on a double by junior Cliffanie Engram (Pelham, Ala.), 6-2. Engram and Mullins scored on a double down the left field line by freshman Kris Lara (Elk Grove, Calif.), 8-2.
Winning pitcher was Megan Stephenson (Washington, Ill.). Stephenson (6-3) threw all seven innings for the Blazers allowing two runs on five hits. She recorded four strikeouts.
UAB scored in the bottom of the first inning for the second game. Hithe scored on a triple down the right field line by Mullins. Mullins scored on a wild pitch by the Lipscomb pitcher, 2-0.
The Blazers added two more runs in the second. Paul and Lara scored on a double by freshman outfielder Kristin Stanfill (Goodlettsville, Tenn.), 4-0. Stanfill scored on a RBI by Engram, 5-0.
UAB scored again in the third inning when Stanfill doubled to center field to bring in Rouse, who ran for Paul, and Ellis, 7-0.
Rouse hit a single in the fourth inning to add two more bringing in Engram and freshman Sara Christophel (Birmingham, Ala.), 9-0.
Junior Kelli Thompson (Decatur, Ala.) picked up the win for the Blazers. Thompson (5-1) threw five innings, allowing only three hits and striking out three.
UAB is up next tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader against Saint Louis, beginning at 4 p.m.
