Softball Sweeps SLU

Birmingham, Ala. - UAB (20-7, 3-0) swept Saint Louis (11-4, 0-3) this afternoon in Conference USA action. The Blazers won the first game, 4-2, and the second, 4-3.
SLU scored two runs in the third inning off one hit and an error, 2-0.
The Blazers fought back in the fourth inning. After leading off with a single, sophomore Beth Mullins (Fairhope, Ala.) scored on a single by senior Kai Paul (Birmingham, Ala.). Senior Aimee Vaughn (New Orleans, La.) and freshman Kristin Stanfill (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) scored off a triple to right field by sophomore catcher Amanda Ellis (Axis, Ala.), 3-2.
UAB added another run in the fifth inning when junior Cliffanie Engram (Pelham, Ala.) scored on a hit by Paul to left field, 4-2.
Senior Megan Stephenson (Washington, Ill.) picked up the win for the Blazers. Stephenson (7-3) threw all seven innings, allowing two runs off three hits.
In game two, the Billikens scored first in the top of the fourth inning off one hit and one error, 1-0.
UAB fought back in the fourth inning when Paul hit a home run to left center to score Mullins, 2-1.
In the fifth inning, SLU put two more runs on the board on three hits, 3-2.
Vaughn tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run to center field, 3-3.
In the bottom of the seventh inning Stanfill scored on a game-winning hit by Engram, 4-3.
Winning pitcher was junior Kelli Thompson (Decatur, Ala.). Thompson (6-1) threw hard for all seven innings, allowing three runs off five hits.
The Blazers are up next at East Carolina for a doubleheader, beginning at 4 p.m., on March 26.
