UAB 1-1 in the Purple & Gold Challenge

Baton Rouge, La. - UAB (11-4) picked up a win at the LSU Purple & Gold Challenge today against McNeese State (9-12), 8-1. In game two, the Blazers fell to LSU (13-5) 3-0.
The Blazers started early scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Junior shortstop Candice Hithe (Daphne, Ala.) led off with a single and scored on a wild pitch. Junior outfielder Cliffanie Engram (Pelham, Ala.) scored on a single by sophomore Beth Mullins (Fairhope, Ala.).
In the third inning, the Blazers added two more runs, 4-1. Senior third baseman Aimee Vaughn (New Orleans, La.) led the inning off with a double to left field. Junior Kelli Thompson (Decatur, Ala.) singled to bring in Vaughn. Freshman outfielder Kris Lara (Elk Grove, Calif.) singled to drive in Kai Paul (Birmingham, Ala.) who was hit by a pitch.
Hithe led off the fourth inning with a bunt single and scored on a single by Paul. Engram followed with an infield single and scored on a hit by Thompson, 6-1.
UAB added another run in the fifth inning after Hithe singled then scored on a throwing error by the first baseman, 7-1.
In the sixth inning, freshman Sara Christophel (Birmingham, Ala.) led off the inning with a walk and scored on a double by Thompson, 8-1.
Junior Kerri Foster (4-1) picked up the win for UAB, throwing seven complete innings. Foster allowed one run off three hits and recorded one strikeout.
The Blazers fell short in game two to LSU, 3-0.
The Tigers scored their first two runs in the bottom of the first inning off two hits and an error by UAB, 2-0.
They added another run in the second inning off of two hits, 3-0.
Senior Megan Stephenson (Washington, Ill.) recorded the lost for UAB. Stephenson (4-2) threw two innings, allowing three runs off five hits and recorded two strikeouts.
The Blazers will play Long Island University at 9 a.m. Sunday morning and then face Georgia Tech at 1 p.m. in the final day of the tournament.
