Softball Drops A Pair Of Games To Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss (17-18, 8-3 Conference USA) swept a doubleheader from UAB (22-10, 5-3 C-USA), winning game one 1-0 and taking game two 4-0, in Conference USA softball action at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
In the first game, Southern Miss broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Megan Stephenson hit shortstop Channika Gant, bringing in left fielder Amanda Brown.
Jessica Holaway (8-5) had the complete game shutout for Southern Miss, pitching seven innings. She allowed two hits, struck out four and walked two. Stephenson (8-4) took the loss for UAB. She allowed one run on four hits, struck out nine and walked two.
Southern Miss got on the board in the first inning of game two. With Brown on third and first baseman Tammy Edwards on second, Brown scored on a close play at the plate, Edwards advanced to third and Gant reached on a fielder's choice. Edwards then scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by catcher Kenya Peters. Southern Miss led 2-0.
The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brown doubled to left center field to score right fielder Sarah Boyd. Brown then scored her second run of the game when Edwards singled to left field.
Felicia Gonzales (6-5) threw the complete game shutout for Southern Miss. Gonzales threw seven innings, allowed five hits, walked three and struck out 10. Kerri Foster (8-4) took the loss for UAB. Foster pitched six innings and allowed four runs on four hits. She struck out two and walked three.
UAB will play the final game of the series against Southern Miss tomorrow at 1 p.m.
