Softball Falls To Southern Miss 4-0

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss (18-18, 9-3 Conference USA) completed a three-game sweep of UAB (22-11, 5-4 C-USA) by defeating the Blazers 4-0 in Conference USA softball action at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Southern Miss took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. With the bases loaded, right fielder Sarah Boyd singled in designated player Kenya Peters. Kelli Thompson then walked third baseman Kristie Martin, allowing second baseman Laura Davis to score.
Southern Miss added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Martin scored on an error by third baseman Aimee Vaughn. Catcher Laura Smith homered to left field later in the inning to put the Golden Eagles up 4-0.
Melissa Cundiff (4-8) had a complete game shutout for Southern Miss, pitching seven innings, striking out four, walking one and only allowing one hit.
Megan Stephenson (8-5) took the loss for UAB. Stephenson pitched one inning and allowed two runs on three hits. Thompson came on to pitch for Stephenson in the second inning. She worked two and two-thirds innings and gave up two runs on four hits. Kerri Foster replaced Thompson in the fourth inning. She pitched two and one-thirds innings and had two strikeouts.
UAB returns home to George Ward Park Field No. 6 Tuesday to face Middle Tennessee in a doubleheader, starting at 4 p.m.
