Softball Wins Two at the Magic City Classic

Birmingham, Ala. - UAB (13-7) beat Birmingham Southern (4-20) in the first game of the 2002 Magic City Classic, 1-0, in eight innings this afternoon. The Blazers faced Samford (11-10) in the nightcap and won, 3-0.
UAB scored in the top of the eighth inning with the tiebreaker rule against BSC, 1-0, in its first game of the day. Junior Kerri Foster (McCalla, Ala.) was the pinch runner, which started on second base in the inning for the Blazers. Foster was sacrificed to third base by freshman Kris Lara (Elk Grove, Calif.). Sophomore catcher Amanda Ellis (Axis, Ala.) hit a double to right center to bring in the only run of the game.
Senior Aimee Vaughn (New Orleans, La.), sophomore Beth Mullins (Fairhope, Ala.), and Ellis each finished the game with one hit each.
Junior Kelli Thompson (Decatur, Ala.) picked up the win for the Blazers throwing all eight innings. Thompson (4-1) allowed four hits and recorded five strikeouts.
UAB faced Samford in the second game of the day.
In the bottom of the first inning against Samford, junior Candice Hithe (Daphne, Ala.) led off with a walk. Mullins homered to left center to bring Hithe in, 2-0.
The Blazers added a run in the bottom of the fourth on a home run to center field by Vaughn, 3-0.
Foster (5-3) picked up the victory for UAB. Foster only allowed four hits over seven innings of work and recorded eight strikeouts.
UAB will play again tomorrow at 1 p.m. against BSC and at 3 p.m. against Samford.
