Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. - UAB (29-15, 9-5 Conference USA) swept a doubleheader from South Florida (19-27-1, 5-7 C-USA), winning game one 4-0 and taking game two 2-0, in Conference USA softball action at the USF Softball complex.
UAB took the lead in the top of the third inning in game one, as second baseman Beth Mullins singled to left field, allowing shortstop Candice Hithe to score. Designated player Kelli Thompson then singled through the right side, scoring Mullins. UAB led 2-0.
UAB added a run in the top of the fifth inning. Thompson got her second RBI of the day, as she singled in center fielder Cliffanie Engram to put UAB up 3-0.
The Blazers extended their lead to 4-0 on an Engram double that scored Hithe.
Megan Stephenson (10-7) had the complete game shutout for UAB, working seven innings and allowing only two hits. She walked three and struck out five.
Corin Tassio (8-8) took the loss for South Florida. She pitched six innings and allowed three runs on nine hits. Katie Dugger worked one inning in relief for the Bulls and gave up one run on three hits.
In game two, UAB took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Third baseman Aimee Vaughn walked to start the inning. First baseman Kai Paul followed with a walk. Both players then advanced a base on a passed ball by Andrea Buenano. Right fielder Kris Lara then reached on a fielder's choice and Vaughn scored on a close play at the plate.
UAB added a run in the top of the sixth inning. Lara got her second RBI of the game, as she doubled to left field, scoring Kristin Stanfill, who was pinch running for Paul.
Kerri Foster (11-6) had the complete game shutout for UAB, pitching seven innings and allowing only two hits. She had two walks and four strikeouts.
Nikki Trowell (8-12) took the loss for the Bulls. She worked five and one-thirds innings and allowed two runs on two hits. She walked four and struck out six. Rachel Rosenbaum came on in relief of Trowell in the top of the sixth inning. Rosenbaum pitched one and two-thirds innings, gave up three hits and struck out one.
UAB will face South Florida in the final game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. (ET).
