Softball Sweeps Three-Game Series From South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. - UAB (30-15, 10-5 C-USA) completed a three-game sweep of South Florida (19-28-1, 5-8 C-USA), defeating the Bulls 8-0 in Conference USA softball action at the USF Softball Complex.
UAB took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Shortstop Candice Hithe led off with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a fielding error by left fielder Renee Oursler. Left fielder Cliffanie Engram then singled through the left side, scoring Hithe. Second baseman Beth Mullins advanced Engram to second on a sacrifice bunt. Engram went to third on a passed ball by Courtney Lewellen. Third baseman Aimee Vaughn then singled through the middle, scoring Engram.
UAB added a run in the top of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Hithe was put out unassisted at first, allowing Kristin Stanfill, who was pinch running for first baseman Kai Paul, to score.
UAB extended its lead to 5-0 in the top of the sixth inning. Catcher Amanda Ellis walked to start the inning. Center fielder Emily Scarbrough then advanced Ellis to second on a sacrifice slap hit. Engram later reached first on a fielding error by first baseman Carmela Liwag that allowed Ellis to score. Pitcher Kelli Thompson later singled to the left side, scoring Engram.
Engram got her fourth RBI of the day in the top of the seventh inning, as she doubled to left field with the bases loaded, scoring Ellis, Scarbrough and Hithe.
UAB had a total of eight runs on 15 hits for the game and out hit the Bulls 32-11 for the series.
Thompson (9-2) had a complete game shutout for UAB. She worked seven innings, allowed seven hits, three walks and had one strikeout.
Katie Dugger (2-8) took the loss for South Florida. She pitched three and one-thirds innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. Gail Callinan came on in relief of Dugger in the top of the fourth inning and worked two-thirds of an inning. Rachel Rosenbaum closed the game for the Bulls, pitching three innings. She allowed five runs on seven hits.
UAB swept a doubleheader from South Florida Saturday, winning game one 4-0 and taking game two 2-0.
UAB returns home to George Ward Park Field No. 6 for a three-game C-USA series against Louisville, beginning Saturday. The teams meet in a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and play the final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
