Blazer Freshmen Earn C-USA Women's Golf Honors

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- UAB Freshmen Marika Pluta and Brooke Mangan saved their best for last.
Pluta duplicated her Saturday score firing an even-par 72 on Sunday's final round of the Conference USA Championship, putting her in a tie for fifth spot and earning her All-Tournament honors. The Melbourne, Australia product opened up the championship with a 77, but grinded it out on the weekend to finish with 221.
Earning All-Freshman honors, Mangan shot 75 to start the tournament, followed it up with another 75 on Saturday and rounded it out with a 1-over par 73 during final round action. A native of Victoria, Australia, Mangan finished tied for eighth with 223.
The Blazers finished fifth out of nine C-USA teams at the 5,935-yard par-72 Hattiesburg Country Club shooting 309 Sunday for a 913 total.
Making its Conference USA debut, TCU won the championship after shooting a league record team score of 886. Tulane finished three shots back of the Horned Frogs with 889, followed by South Florida (898) and Memphis (909).
C-USA Player of the Year, Brooke Tull garnered individual honors taking the one stroke win over South Florida's Kelly Martin. Tull shot a 54-hole championship record of 215, while Martin finished with 216. Louisville's Cindy Pasechnik notched third with 217.
Also for the Blazers, junior Christina Gushanas (74-76-80/230) finished tied for 21st, senior Heather Lourie (79-76-86/241) placed 40th and junior Jenni Elmore (80-79-84/243) rounded out the Blazer squad with a 41st place finish.
Tulane picked up a few honors as head coach Sue Bowers earned Coach of the Year and Alexis Wooster was named Freshman of the Year.
