Softball Splits with Charlotte

Birmingham, Ala. - The Blazers (26-13, C-USA 6-5) split this afternoon with Charlotte (17-19, C-USA 2-8). UAB beat the 49ers in the first game 3-0, but fell short in game two, 6-5, in eight innings.
Freshman Sara Christophel (Birmingham, Ala.) singled then scored on a wild pitch by Charlotte pitcher, Betsy Thompson, in the bottom of the first inning to give the Blazers an early lead, 1-0.
After Christophel singled in the sixth inning, sophomore second baseman Beth Mullins (Fairhope, Ala.) doubled to left field to score Christophel. The Blazers added another run when junior Cliffanie Engram singled to right field to bring Mullins in, 3-0.
Christophel led UAB going 3-3 and scoring two runs.
Junior Kelli Thompson (Decatur, Ala.) picked up the win for UAB throwing all seven innings, allowing only one hit. Thompson (8-3) had six strikeouts on the day.
In game two, Charlotte started early scoring four runs in the second inning. Nora Petrie singled to bring in Leah Heston. Kristin White hit a home run to left field to score Petrie and Melanie Thevenote, 4-0.
The Blazers fought back in the third inning when senior third baseman Aimee Vaughn (New Orleans, La.) singled to left field to score Engram and sophomore catcher Amanda Ellis (Axis, Ala.), who pinch ran for Kai Paul (Birmingham, Ala.), 4-2.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, UAB added another run when Christophel singled to bring in freshman Kris Lara (Elk Grove, Calif.), 4-3.
Junior Kerri Foster (McCalla, Ala.) drove in Ellis, who pinch ran for Paul, in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game, 4-4.
For Charlotte in the eighth inning, Heston scored on a fielder's choice by Kiley Scott. Densie Atmar drove in Scott to add another run in late innings, 6-4.
UAB scored a run in the eighth inning when freshman Kristin Stanfill (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) scored on a fielder's choice, 6-5.
Paul, Vaughn, and Lara each finished the second game with two hits.
Foster (10-5) took the lost for the Blazers, allowing six runs off 11 hits. Foster recorded four strikeouts in eight innings of work.
The Blazers are up next tomorrow at 1 p.m. to play the last game of the series against Charlotte.
