Blazers Fall To TCU 3-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - TCU (17-8, 3-4 Conference USA) defeated UAB 3-2 in Conference USA volleyball action Saturday evening at Bartow Arena.
Senior outside hitter Martina Shields had 21.5 points and posted her 11th double-double of the season with 21 kills and 12 digs to lead UAB. Three other Blazers recorded double-doubles for UAB in the match. Sophomore outside hitter Breanne Swenson posted her 11th of the year with 16 kills and 20 digs to go along with 18.5 points, senior middle blocker Karen Boyd had her sixth with 16 kills and 14 digs to go along with 17.5 points and a .324 hitting percentage, and freshman setter Bilun Gunal posted her third with 61 assists and 18 digs. In addition, sophomore outside/right side hitter Lindsay Carnohan had 18.5 points on 16 kills.
"Obviously, this was a disappointing loss," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "I was very proud of how the team played. We've really matured quite a bit as a team. We played two really tough matches back to back and I'm proud of how we competed. I thought we played good team volleyball tonight."
TCU jumped out to an 8-0 lead in game one and never looked back en route to a 30-15 victory.
The second game was tightly contested as the score was tied on 10 occasions, but with the score tied at 25, UAB was able to gain the upper hand, holding on for a 30-28 win.
UAB led most of the way in game three, but TCU battled back to knot the score at 26 all. The teams traded points, but with the score tied at 30, Shields put away two kills to seal a 32-30 victory.
Game four started close, but with the score tied at 15, TCU was able to pull away for a 30-22 win.
Game five saw another back-and-forth battle, but after UAB tied the score at 11, the Horned Frogs went on a 4-0 run to win the game 15-11.
TCU was led by junior opposite side hitter Ellen Rehme who had 26.5 points on 26 kills while hitting for .418. Senior setter Tori Barlow added 60 assists for the Horned Frogs.
UAB (11-14, 4-4 C-USA) returns home to Bartow Arena Saturday to take on C-USA rival USF (10-15, 4-4 C-USA) at 7 p.m.
