BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's soccer team (9-3-5, 4-2-2 C-USA) improved to No. 20 in the nation in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top-25 poll. In addition, the Blazers are ranked fourth in the NSCAA South Region poll.
"We have been playing some of our best soccer lately and its good to see the team is getting nationally recognized," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "We have been in the national rankings the entire season and hopefully that is something that will benefit us in the future, but we still have a lot of work to do on the field."
After opening the 2003 campaign undefeated through the first eight games and two months of the season, the Blazers have now been unbeaten in their last six contests. UAB went on a rough skid with three consecutive losses; however, since losing to Memphis on Oct. 8, UAB has gone six games without a loss, going 3-0-3 during that stretch. During that span, UAB has outscored its competition 12-4, and has three shutouts.
The Blazers are also ranked 25th in the College Soccer News latest poll, and 30th in the Soccer Times poll.
The biggest game of the season looms next for the Blazers. UAB will play its final home game of the season when it plays host to No. 6 Saint Louis on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. The game will mark the home finale for eight UAB seniors who will be honored prior to the start of the contest. Depending on what happens in the Cincinnati vs. Marquette game earlier in the afternoon, the Blazers could be playing for the Conference USA regular season title.
The first 400 fans through the gate on Saturday night will receive UAB CheerStix and the first 250 students will receive free slices of pizza, while supplies last.
