CHICAGO - UAB (14-14, 6-4 Conference USA) defeated DePaul 3-1 in Conference USA volleyball action Friday evening at the DePaul Athletic Center.
Sophomore outside/right side hitter Lindsay Carnohan recorded her third straight (fifth overall) double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs to go along with a career-high nine service aces and 23 points to lead UAB. Senior outside hitter Martina Shields posted her 12th double-double of the season with 17 kills and 10 digs to go along with 18 points and two total blocks for the Blazers. Senior middle blocker Karen Boyd added 17.5 points on 14 kills, three total blocks and two service aces, while hitting for .367 for UAB. Sophomore outside hitter Breanne Swenson had 11.5 points on nine kills and two service aces to go along with a match-high 19 digs and freshman setter Bilun Gunal added 49 assists for the Blazers.
"The team continues to play good team volleyball," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "We did a great job of executing our system tonight. We are looking forward to a tough match against Marquette tomorrow."
Game-one saw explosive hitting from both teams. DePaul hit .357, while UAB averaged a .325 attack percentage. The two teams would go point for point, neither team taking the lead by more than two points throughout the match. The Blazers would pull out the win, 31-29.
DePaul (11-17, 3-8 C-USA) would lead by as many as seven points in game-two, but were unable to string together rallies and allowed UAB to creep back into the game. The Blazers would tie the game at 26 on a kill by Gunal. The Blazers never looked back, winning the game 30-28.
The Blue Demons came back from the break and controlled the tempo in game three, taking the first six points. DePaul continued to build on its lead and went on an 11 point run to win game three 30-17.
UAB stopped the Blue Demon momentum in game four, winning the contest 30-25.
Junior middle blocker Janet Goreham had 23 points on 19 kills and seven total blocks to go along with a .586 hitting percentage to lead DePaul. Junior setter Amie West added a double-double for the Blue Demons with 51 assists and 14 digs.
UAB next travels to Milwaukee, Wis. to take on C-USA rival Marquette Saturday at 7 p.m.
